Barriers to communication

Types of barriers:

  • Physical barriers
  • Psychological barrier
  • Defensiveness and fear
  • Linguistic and cultural barrier
  • Mechanical barriers

Physical barriers:

A physical barrier to communication is a physical factor or element that inhibits effective exchanges between two or more parties. Some barriers can be environmental, such as the design of an office space compromising casual employee communication, or disruptive ambient noise during a conversation.

Psychological barrier:

Psychological barriers in communication are mental or emotional blocks that can hinder the exchange of ideas or messages between people. These barriers can stem from a variety of sources, including personal experiences, emotions, perceptions, and attitudes.

Defensiveness and fear barrier:

A defensive listener will be less able to "hear" what the speaker is saying. In some cases, instead of listening, a person is thinking about why an interaction is occurring or perhaps preparing a response to a message that he or she hasn't heard.

Linguistic and cultural barrier:

A language barrier is any linguistic limitation that creates confusion or prevents comprehension. A barrier could refer to national and cultural languages but may also include specialized knowledge or speech impairments. Whatever the source of the problem, it's crucial to identify language barriers and manage them.

Mechanical barriers:

A mechanical barrier of communication is caused by a flaw in the machinery or instruments used to convey the message. Mechanical communication obstacles include loud communication machines or instruments, a lack of communication instruments, transmission interruption, and power outages.
